We were delighted to have actor, producer, and activist Priyanka Chopra join us on September 6, 2017 as our guest of honour at TIFF Soirée, an annual fundraiser that kicks off the Toronto International Film Festival. Priyanka Chopra — actress, producer, and activist — is one of the most recognized and applauded acting talents in the world, with a career traversing the world’s pre-eminent film industries in India and the US. Since the Miss World title catapulted her to international stardom at age 17, Chopra has charted an impressive and prolific career in Indian cinema, including the award-winning Fashion (08), and TIFF Official Selections *What’s Your Raashee? *(09) and Mary Kom (14). She made her American TV debut as Alex Parrish on ABC’s hit drama Quantico — renewed for a third season! — making history as the first Indian actor to star as the lead of a TV drama series in the US. In 2016, Chopra won a People’s Choice Award for her role in Quantico in the category of “Favorite Actress in a New Television Series,” again making history as the first Indian actor to win a People’s Choice Award. Chopra recently took on her inaugural Hollywood role as antagonist Victoria Leeds in the action-comedy Baywatch (17). After serving as a National Goodwill Ambassador to India for 10 years, Chopra was named a global UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. She is also a UN Foundation Girl Up Champion, and is involved in a number of efforts to protect children’s rights and promote the education of girls in India, including her namesake charity The Priyanka Chopra Foundation for Health and Education.
TIFF has made a five-year commitment to increasing participation, skills, and opportunities for women behind and in front of the camera. We will prioritize gender parity with a focus on mentorship, skills development, media literacy, and activity for young people.
