115 new films added to the TIFF '18 lineup

From Masters and Wavelengths, to Galas and Special Presentations

This morning, the Toronto International Film Festival announced a second batch of titles premiering in this September’s Gala and Special Presentations programmes.

Four Gala Presentations and 22 Special Presentations have been added to the 47 titles already announced. This second wave includes the Opening Night Film Outlaw King, David Mackenzie’s anticipated period drama chronicling the rise of 14th-century Scottish hero Robert the Bruce (Chris Pine); and the Closing Night Film Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy, based on one of the most famous literary gambits in history, and starring the one-two punch of Kristen Stewart and Laura Dern.

Eleven films by acclaimed and established auteurs were also announced as the Festival’s Masters programme, including new works by Paolo Sorrentino, Jean-Luc Godard, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Hong Sang-soo, Carlos Reyadas, and Jia Zhang-ke. With projects that reflect on history, focus on personal introspection, and take a critical look at society, this year’s programme proves that innovation in storytelling is not exclusive to newer generations of filmmakers.

The Festival also announced the 47 titles from international filmmakers that comprise this year’s Contemporary World Cinema roster. This year’s programme features luminous films from 30 countries — with a strong presence from Latin America and Eastern Europe — telling stories of identity, depicting family dynamics, and making bold political statements.

Several of the the impressive 27 World Premieres in the programme are from TIFF veterans, including Belmonte from Uruguay’s Federico Veiroj, The Other Story from Israel’s Avi Nesher, Stupid Young Heart from Finnish Academy Award nominee Selma Vilhunen, Quién te Cantará from Spain’s Carlos Vermut, and Look at Me from Tunisia’s Nejib Belkadhi.

The 18th edition of Wavelengths and its adventurous lineup of shorts and feature films from around the world were also announced today. This rich and varied selection of 43 films demonstrates the ways in which filmmakers continue to expand cinema’s aesthetic, narrative, and documentary forms and languages.

“This year’s edition of Wavelengths is undoubtedly one of its most heterogeneous, with films ranging from one minute to 14 hours in formats that include 16mm, 35mm, 70mm, and digital, offering sensual dives into fiction, structural abstraction, and uncompromising documentaries,” said curator Andréa Picard. “While the term ‘avant-garde’ may hold less meaning today or ring suspicious, it is nevertheless clear that filmmakers and artists continue to expand cinema’s aesthetic and expressive possibilities and are willing to take great risks, ensuring vibrancy in the artform. In today’s cultural and political landscapes, these risks are essential and cannot be underestimated.”

The 43rd Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 6 to 16, 2018. Individual tickets go on sale September 1 to TIFF Members, September 2 to Insiders, and September 3 to the public.
