WHY TO WATCH: This is epic filmmaking at its finest. Director King Hu's A Touch of Zen was the first martial arts film ever to screen in competition at Cannes. It directly influenced another critically lauded wuxia film, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and with its Leia-like female lead character and Jedi-style fighting, Star Wars fans should take note. And now you can see Hu's film in its best form: the print has undergone a brilliant digital restoration, so that every stunning nature scene, every chase through the treetops and every hurled blade is bright, clear and perfect. Somewhere between action movie and meditative practice, you don't simply watch A Touch of Zen, you experience it.
