A precursor of the NFB's celebrated Challenge for Change program, this cinema-verité portrait of the day-to-day struggles of an impoverished, 11-member family as they attempt to negotiate the social welfare system elicited a firestorm of controversy and initiated debates about documentary ethics which persist to this day.
