With her second feature, South African director Jenna Bass offers a thought-provoking mediation on the intersection of race, gender, and identity. When four friends embark on a camping trip at an isolated farm in South Africa's Northern Cape, they wake up to find they've swapped bodies. Stranded and disturbed, the group must navigate myriad personal and political issues if their friendship is to survive. High Fantasy has a raw, reality-television style vibe that is grounded by incredible performances from Qondiswa James, Liza Scholtz, Nala Khumalo, and Francesca Michel, all co-writers of the script.
The dialogue is smart, funny, and stands out for capturing the way young people actually speak. The film is a genre-bending mix of Blair Witch and Freaky Friday, and, impressively, was shot entirely on an iPhone, cementing Bass as part of a new wave of South African filmmakers who are pushing the boundaries of cinema.
