"Think Pink!" commands a fashion mag's new marketing campaign in Funny Face, but Stanley Donen's lavish musical tribute to haute couture will have you contemplating crimson (as in a Givenchy gown or red-lined raincoat), noir (a beatnik ensemble of black turtleneck and Capri pants), and every colour in between. Funny Face stars Fred Astaire as a veteran fashion photographer (loosely based on Richard Avedon, who served as visual consultant on the film) who discovers the next supermodel working in a Greenwich Village book store: ethereal Audrey Hepburn, who reluctantly leaves her dusty tomes for the Paris of Sartre and Montmartre. With droll Gershwin tunes, the legendary Kay Thompson as a fashion editor modelled on Diana Vreeland, and a succession of City of Light locales, Funny Face is damnably deluxe. "One of the last great musicals" (David Thomson); "Knocks most other musicals off the screen for its visual beauty, its witty panache, and its totally uncalculating charm" (Time Out London).
