TIFF Transforms

Winter 2019 Edition

2018 was a landmark year for our efforts to transform the way people see the world through film. We shared eye-opening titles like ROMA and ANTHROPOCENE: The Human Epoch, brought 22,000 people together in support of gender parity in the film industry at the Share Her Journey Rally, and provided opportunities for over 250 emerging filmmakers to improve their skills and advance their careers.

All of this was made possible through the support of the thousands of supporters in our community.

2019 will be another incredible year because of the continued support and passion of film lovers who share TIFF’s commitment to film. In our Winter 2019 edition, we share some of the events and programmes that will make this a year to remember.

Showcasing Mexican cinema

Screening this spring at TIFF Bell Lightbox is our series on Mexican cinema, curated by Guillermo del Toro and TIFF programmer Diana Sanchez. Ahead of the series launch, Sanchez shared some insight on this expansive and eclectic survey of Mexican film history.

Shining a light on an endangered language

Edge of the Knife, an Official Selection in our Canada’s Top Ten series, was the first feature made entirely in the Haida language. Producer Jonathan Frantz stopped by TIFF Long Take to talk about what it was like to create such an important film.

TIFF Next Wave

The TIFF Next Wave Film Festival — programmed for young people, by young people — recently took over TIFF Bell Lightbox. Before the festival began, TIFF Next Wave Committee members Tshego, Natalie, and Haikun shared what films they were excited to see.

From TIFF Studio to Award Winners

We spoke with the newest recipients of the TIFF–CBC Films Screenwriter Award, Tracey Deer and Meredith Vuchnich, to talk about their journeys as female filmmakers and what this opportunity means to them.
