Founded in 2010, the TIFF Next Wave Committee is a group of 12 students ranging in age from 15 to 18 and selected from a competitive pool of hopeful young film enthusiasts. Hailing from specialized arts institutions, public schools, and private schools across the GTA, the Committee members’ tastes, opinions, and critical voices are as diverse as they are strong. Some are aspiring filmmakers, writers, and actors; some are interested in learning the business of film and festivals; some like planning cultural events; and some just love movies. All have demonstrated a spirit that has impressed TIFF leaders.

We chatted with the Committee about their festival picks, their favourite snacks, and the always-crucial question: "who would play you in a movie?"

Blue My Mind. This film tells a raw story of a girl going through puberty and feeling so out of touch with her body. Many of us have probably felt this at one point in our lives, and I recommend this film because, even though it is a fantasy, it feels so real.

Jinn. This film has bridged the gap between accurate representations of Islam in film, and movies that are relatable to everyone growing up. It also has some amazing montages that will blow you away.

Slut in a Good Way! This hilarious film focuses on the sexual liberation of a teenage girl exploring her sexuality, while also facing the double standard between men and women when it comes to sex. If you're looking for a very fun, very chill movie that pushes the boundaries, this is the one!

Respeto is the epitome of a conscientious hip-hop film that reflects a deeper political message. It is a universal film that tackles contemporary social issues — like drug abuse, police brutality, and sexual assault — head-on, and should be seen in today's age.

Who would play you in a movie? Jonah Hill

But I'm a Cheerleader! It's a classic and satirical take on a topic that is still relevant today. Its bright colours and rich symbolism make for an exciting view that's fit for anyone, even if you prefer to sit on the bleachers.

10 Things I Hate About You, simply because it’s about finding yourself and losing yourself at the same time; allowing yourself to feel vulnerable and stupid and clueless, yet powerful, in one breath. I feel like that’s a perfect description of what growing up is like.

Minding the Gap because it’s a coming-of-age powerhouse that beautifully shows viewers the strength of teenagers and their passions in times of despair and trauma.
