Hump Day Movie: Spring Breakers
James Franco goes Four Loko
It's the middle of March, and if you are a parent to a small human or have been outside of your workplace during daylight hours, that means one thing: March Break is here! A time of relaxation and reflection, March Break is the perfect opportunity to recharge one's emotional and spiritual batteries in the company of family and friends, ensuring a productive and fulfilling spring. It's also a really excellent time to head to warmer climes and make poor life choices.
With that in mind, we suggest that you don your favourite pink balaclava and relax with Harmony Korine's Spring Breakers. This will make you feel as though you are currently the most productive and upstanding individual, all while you groove to its Gucci Mane-heavy soundtrack.
The film follows a group of young women who decide to rob a local restaurant to fund their Spring Break trip. The group heads south for a week, and chaos ensues. Korine's version of St. Petersburg, Florida is an over-saturated, hedonistic paradise, captured by intrusive and intimate camera work. Populated by frat boys, party girls, and a drug dealer/rapper named Alien (played by the incomparable James Franco), this film drives inexorably towards its violent conclusion.
Plus, it features the best rendition of Britney Spears' "Everytime" ever performed. You'll never look at a love ballad or interpretive dance with high-powered firearms the same way again.
