TIFF's Halloween Costume Ideas For Film Lovers

Let our fall programming be your guide

Whoops — it happened again. One week from Halloween and you put off planning that epic costume (or perhaps, you simply shudder at the idea of walking into one of those stores, blasting spooky sound effects, filled with plastic-covered polyester and inexplicably “sexy” animal costumes). But you needn’t just half-ass it and call it a day: lookin’ good is scarily easy!

This year, the best inspiration is right in front of you: on screen at TIFF Bell Lightbox. Your next DIY costume is best reflected in our 2016 Fall Programming.

Bill Cunningham New York

Bicycle + blue work-coat + camera. Done. Have a stylish night.

Star Trek

Whether you're looking at the original programming or The Next Generation, take those J.J. Abrams lens flares, throw on a primary-coloured onesie and have a great night. Spock ears not mandatory but encouraged.

Original cinema bad boy Rainer Werner Fassbinder

No filmmaker ever lived as hard or as fast as Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and those glasses are pretty sweet.

See his films

The Royal Tenenbaums

Margot and Richie are a very popular choice, but don’t overlook the simplicity of this group costume.

See the film

The Night of the Hunter

Dress in all black, paint your knuckles with "LOVE" and "HATE" and try not to freak too many people out as the mad, misogynist and murderous preacher from Charles Laughton's American masterpiece.

See the film

The Shining

There is a lot to choose from here. You can “Here’s Johnny!” it with an ax and a face-framing door, or go as Kubrick's creepy twins with a friend.

See the film

The Blue Angel

Don a top hat and heels and embody all the carbaret glamour of Marlene Dietrich in this German classic.

See the film

Raiders of the Lost Ark

You get to carry a whip all night. This alone makes it awesome.

See the film

Alien

Be the bad-ass female action ideal, Ripley, or a face-sucking alien. It's up to you.

See the film

Kiki’s Delivery Service

The teenage witch of this Studio Ghibli hit will be one of the sweetest witch costumes of the season. All you need is a broom, a messenger bag and a large jaunty bow. Extra points for bringing a black cat.

See the film

E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial

You can go big with this one, or you can keep it simple. Either way, your E.T. gets a lot of points for the nostalgia-factor alone (and isn't a Stranger Things rip-off).

See the film

Johnny Guitar

Haven't you heard? Westerns are cool again.

See the film

The Matrix

Break out your best pleather and sunglasses to be original power couple Neo and Trinity.
