What is a subscription series?

Subscription series offer monthly access to specially curated films and talks on digital TIFF Bell Lightbox. Our current series include Reel Talk: Contemporary World Cinema, Secret Movie Club, and Books on Film.

How does it work?

For subscribers: Films are added to digital TIFF Bell Lightbox on select Fridays and are available for a 48-hour period. You have 24 hours from the moment you click play to finish the film before it is removed from your Library.

For single-ticket purchasers of Reel Talk and Secret Movie Club: All events in the series will be available to rent directly on digital TIFF Bell Lightbox as of November 20 and November 27, respectively. Tickets go off-sale the same Friday as the event at 12pm ET.

For single-ticket purchasers of Books on Film: All events in the series will be available to rent directly on digital TIFF Bell Lightbox as of April 9. Tickets will be available throughout the series and you do not need to rent the film the same weekend it launches.

A live or pre-recorded Q&A with a special guest will accompany each film. Reel Talk and Secret Movie Club Q&As take place on Zoom, Sundays at 2pm ET, and Books on Film Q&As will be available directly on digital TIFF Bell Lightbox for the same 48-hour window as the film.

When and where can I buy tickets?

Subscriptions for the 2020–21 season of Reel Talk and Secret Movie Club are no longer available. Subscriptions for Books on Film will be available to purchase on TIFF Account Manager on the following dates:

March 3 – Subscription renewals start for TIFF Members
March 10 – Subscription renewals start for the public
March 17 – New subscriptions on sale to TIFF Members
March 24 – New subscriptions on sale to the public
April 7 – Last day to buy subscriptions (sales close at 6pm ET)
April 9 – Single tickets on sale via digital TIFF Bell Lightbox at 10am ET

Can I watch from anywhere in the world?

Films featured on our online platform, digital TIFF Bell Lightbox, are geo-blocked to Canada due to agreements with film creators, rights holders, and distributors. This is similar to other online platforms and streaming services. A recording of the live Q&A will be made available to subscribers and single ticket buyers after the event.

How can I watch with a friend?

If you wish to watch films with friends remotely, each person will need their own account and their own subscription or ticket. Please see “When and where can I buy tickets?” above for information about onsale dates.

How many subscriptions/tickets can I buy?

There is a limit of one subscription per series, per account. If you purchased tickets for friends in past years, please reach out to customerrelations@tiff.net for more information on how they can get access.

Can I buy a subscription/ticket as a gift?

We are currently unable to accommodate gift subscriptions. Each household requires their own account, and must purchase their own subscription or ticket.

Do I have to watch the films at a specific time?

Digital screenings are not live events, and are only available for a limited period. Reel Talk and Secret Movie Club screenings will be available to watch from 12pm ET on Friday until 12pm ET on Sunday. Books on Film screenings will be available to watch from 6pm ET on Friday until 6pm ET on Sunday. Once you click play, you will have 24 hours to complete the film. Event dates can be found on the Reel Talk: Contemporary World Cinema, Secret Movie Club, and Books on Film web pages.

Can I start a film and come back to it later?

Yes. Films can be paused and resumed at any point within the 48-hour window. Once you click play, you have 24 hours to finish watching. If you want to make sure the films will play on your home system, watch this video for free to try it out.

Can I exchange or transfer a ticket to a friend?

Tickets for subscription series cannot be exchanged or transferred. All sales are final, and neither full nor partial refunds are permitted.

How do I watch the introduction and Q&A?

All subscription series events will include pre-recorded introductions by the hosts. They are a part of the film, so there’s no need to look for them.

Reel Talk and Secret Movie Club Q&As are live and take place on Zoom, Sundays at 2pm ET. Prior to each screening, you will receive an email reminder including a link to the Q&A. This is the only way to access the live conversation, and is open for the duration of the Q&A.

Books on Film Q&As will be available directly on digital TIFF Bell Lightbox for the same 48-hour window as the film. You will receive an email reminder prior to each screening, and can find the Q&A included in the Bonus Content at the bottom of the film’s detail page. Please note:, Bonus Content cannot currently be viewed on the digital TIFF Bell Lightbox apps, and must be viewed from a web or mobile browser.

I missed the Q&A. Can I still watch it?

Yes. If you missed the Q&A for Reel Talk or Secret Movie Club over the weekend, you will be able to watch a recorded version on digital TIFF Bell Lightbox. You will find the Q&A recording in your Library, which is accessible via the dropdown menu under your name when signed in.
