Presented in a new digital restoration in the Cannes Classics sidebar in 2016, the debut feature of Mexican auteur Arturo Ripstein (Deep Crimson) has a prestigious pedigree: it was adapted by the great novelist Carlos Fuentes from an original story by Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez. Returning to his small hometown after serving 18 years in prison for murder, Juan Sáyago (Jorge Martinez de Hoyos, The Magnificent Seven) seeks to restart his life with his old flame Mariana (Marga López, star of Luis Buñuel's Nazarin), but the sons of the man he killed are waiting for him with vengeance in their hearts. "A stark and fatalistic revenge story … Anticipating Márquez's own Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Time to Die reveals machismo as a pernicious cultural heredity, a curse pushing men towards unrelenting violence and sexism" (Harvard Film Archive).
