A cheerfully corrupt cop (Nicolas Cage) uncovers a sinister conspiracy following a political assassination at a championship Atlantic City boxing match, in De Palma's flamboyant thriller.
Set in a single location — an Atlantic City arena (played by the old Montreal Forum) during a heavyweight boxing championship — Snake Eyes sees De Palma returning to the conspiracy/investigative framework of his earlier masterpiece Blow Out. As Tropical Storm Jezebel bears down on the New Jersey coast, cheerfully corrupt cop Rick Santoro (Nicolas Cage) is a hurricane himself as he blows into the arena (in a virtuosic, seemingly unbroken 12-minute Steadicam shot that cleverly disguises its multiple invisible edits) towards a ringside seat next to his old friend, naval intelligence officer Kevin Dunne (Gary Sinise), who has been assigned to protect the US Secretary of Defense. When the Secretary is assassinated during a suspicious-looking first-round knockout, Santoro locks down the arena as he searches for the killer, as well as the mysterious woman in white (Carla Gugino) who was talking to the Secretary seconds before his murder. "Flamboyant and supercharged … might have the highest fireworks-per-minute rate of any De Palma film" (Justin Stewart, Reverse Shot).
