Assayas co-scripted this dark tale of sexual and romantic obsession, which won André Téchiné the Best Director award at Cannes and provided a young Juliette Binoche with her first starring role. Tired of crashing at friends' apartments, young actress Nina (Binoche) visits a real estate office where she meets Paulot (Wadeck Stanczak). After helping her find a room, Paulot becomes obsessively jealous when he discovers that Nina has been having an affair with his unstable roommate Quentin (Lambert Wilson). While preparing for her role in a production of Romeo and Juliet under the tutelage of an aging theatre director (Jean-Louis Trintignant), Nina finds herself torn between her devotion to Quentin and her mixed feelings for Paulot. "Juliette Binoche's career-defining performance" (Armond White, Film Comment).
