There's a fond familiarity to Dustin Guy Defa's ensemble comedy Person to Person, in which everyday people navigate all things big and small in New York City. It's a mild yet punctuated look at relationships between people that sparkle, flare, and fade out dramatically. The film features a stand-out performance from internet publishing sensation and fashion idol Tavi Gevinson, who plays a queer teen struggling with the revelation that she might be attracted to a boy and whether or not these feelings compromise her identity. The film is infused with an unspecified nostalgia, including Defa's love of vinyl LPs, which add a sense of whimsy to the plot. The interactions in Person to Person are smart and subtle, capturing moments in the lives of its characters (its actors include Abbi Jacobson, Michael Cera, and Philip Baker Hall) that are funny, aptly melancholic, and refreshingly normal.
