Erik Matti proved himself to be a consummate craftsman from the very beginning of his career, but On the Job — which premiered at Cannes and brought Matti a raft of Hollywood offers — is even more slick, assured, and tough-minded than its predecessors. Merging a neo-noir gangster tale with a scathing critique of the Philippine authorities' notorious extra-legal tactics, On the Job follows two imprisoned hitmen (Joel Torre and Gerald Anderson) who are granted day passes to act as on-call assassins for a government-sanctioned, police-run death squad; following their bloody trail, the cops on the case (Piolo Pascual and Joey Marquez) discover the rot within their own ranks. "A gritty[,] engrossing crime thriller … a tense, well-acted B movie [with a ] strong local flavor" (Justin Chang, Variety).
