Chaplin's final farewell to the Little Tramp offers one legendary set piece after another: Charlie serving as guinea pig for an experiment with a feeding machine that runs amok; getting so carried away with his screw-tightening on the assembly line that he gives an inadvertent tune-up to a woman's rear end; rushing to help lift a red flag, unaware that he is leading a communist demonstration; and walking off into the sunset with "gamine" Paulette Goddard in the film's famous finale. "Maintains the playful aura of the early Tramp and the comedic sophistication of The Gold Rush[,] all while carefully balancing the humour with sentiment, charm with political awareness" (Saul Austerlitz).
