An acerbic character study of a former Nazi officer who arrives in Bonn to visit his mistress and clear the name of a Nazi colleague.

The composer Stockhausen wrote Straub a letter to express his admiration for Straub-Huillet's brilliant first film, one of the most important of the emerging New German Cinema. Loosely based on Heinrich Böll's story "Bonn Diary," Machorka-Muff is an acerbic character study of a former Nazi officer who arrives in Bonn to visit his mistress and clear the name of a Nazi colleague. In less than 20 minutes, the directors manage to produce a devastating critique of Germany's rearmament and resurgent militarism in the early '60s.
