Due to unforeseen circumstances, Esther Garrel will no longer be in attendance at our January 25 screening of Lover for a Day. We apologize for the inconvenience.
The conclusion of a loose trilogy that began with Jealousy and continued with In the Shadow of Women, Garrel's most recent exploration of love and (in)fidelity won the SACD prize at Cannes' Director's Fortnight. After a painful breakup with her boyfriend, a young woman named Jeanne (played by Garrel's daughter Esther) returns home to live with her father Gilles (Éric Caravaca) in his small apartment. When Jeanne arrives, she discovers that her father is living with a woman named Ariane (Louise Chevillotte), who is the same age as her. While the two women compete for Gilles' attention, they develop a complicity and a friendship that helps them transcend their prescribed roles as lover and daughter. "Distinguished by its immersion into the desires and contemplations of young women… the film skirts any trace of moralism[:] Desire remains as mysterious and contradictory as ever" (Carson Lund, Slant Magazine).
