Marshall and Van der Kolk scored a considerable casting coup when they snagged stars Richard Burton and Tatum O'Neal for this May-December romance, about a middle-aged artist struggling with a devastating crisis of confidence who becomes smitten with a teenage student whom he meets in a less than promising location: a porno theatre. (She's there on a dare.) Directed by Jules Dassin (whose transatlantic career includes the French crime classic Rififi, which we screened at the Cinematheque last season), Circle of Two is remarkably chaste given its daring subject matter — and certainly more so than the rowdy doings offscreen during the film's production. (In his memoir Film Festival Confidential, Marshall recounts how Burton regularly held court at the Windsor Arms, and at one point challenged his co-star's father Ryan O'Neal to a fist fight.)
