The Young Creators Co-Lab is a gathering space for young and emerging filmmakers in Toronto to connect with industry professionals and collaborate on all things film. Emerging from the former TIFF Next Wave Talent Lab, we are expanding the programme this year to offer a full day of programming for filmmakers and creatives.
9:30-10:30 Kick off the day with coffee and snacks as Allia Mcleod (HuffPost Canada) and actor Amandla Stenberg chat about #AfterMeToo, Time’s Up, and all the ways we’re (yes, you!) working to change and reimagine the industry.
10:30-12:00 A workshop from writer, director, actor + Kelly McCormack: Come workshop this innovative concept from Kelly McCormack (facilitated by a guest artist) that gets you up on stage (if you want) and talking your way from scene to story. Use the way we talk as a tool to generate script ideas and characters out of thin air! Surprise yourself and leave with a useful, simple and age-old tool for writing, directing, and storytelling. If this all sounds weird and mysterious — good! Come and see for yourself...
12:00-1:00 PIZZA + STORIES + PIZZA + CONNECTION + PIZZA + YOU (lunch)
1:00-2:00 Phone a (famous) friend! We’re skyping with writer, director, executive producer, and showbiz extraordinaire Greg Berlanti (Dawson’s Creek, Riverdale, Black Lighting, The Flash, Arrow, Love Simon) to go deep into the world of big studios and the evolution of youth, superheroes and representation on the small screen (TV).
2:00-3:00 FIRECRACKERS! A shorts to feature case study Join the forever team — Ryerson grads Caitlin Grabham and Jasmin Mozaffari — who will share their journey from creating the short Firecrackers to completing the feature version. The session will include the creative transition and important info on festivals, funding (including the Telefilm microbudget fund), the director-producer team, and more!
3:15-4:45 TIFF x The Creator Class: finding your voice as a creator We are excited to partner with the Creator Class and a roster of truly diverse artists that are making huge waves in the art and media worlds. This conversation will be full of wisdom and experience about finding and keeping your voice as a creator as you navigate multiple industries. Featured guests include Olivia Bee (photographer), Maria Qamar (Hate Copy), Monica Heisey (comedy writer), Jon Riera (director and visual expert), and Kawennáhere Devery Jacobs (actor, director), and will be moderated by Jordan Sowunmi (Boosie Fade Film Club ++).
Can’t commit to the full day of Co-Lab? Drop in for a single session for only $5. Class drop-in tickets are sold 10 minutes prior to each session's start time on a first-come, first-served basis, so arrive early to claim your spot!
