Championing women in front of and behind the camera

Share Her Journey began in 2017 as a five-year campaign committed to addressing gender parity and championing women in front of and behind the camera, both year-round and during the Toronto International Film Festival.

It has since evolved into a permanent TIFF initiative, supporting creators at every stage of their professional journey. This global movement is dedicated to building frameworks, empowering creators, and forging paths for women to succeed as storytellers who help shape our cultural landscape.

By the numbers

There is a considerable lack of women storytellers in key creative and decision-making roles in the film industry:*

  • In 2025, women comprised only 23% of directors, writers, producers, executive producers, editors, and cinematographers working on the 250 top grossing films.
  • Of the top-grossing films in 2025, only nine were directed by women.
  • In 2025, 93% of the top 250 films had no women cinematographers, 86% had no women directors, 75% had no women editors, and 74% had no women writers.

This hasn’t gone unnoticed at TIFF.

Since 2017, we have had an equal 50/50 gender split in selected participants for our Talent Development initiatives such as TIFF Filmmaker Lab, TIFF Writers’ Studio, and TIFF Rising Stars.

53% of the speakers at our 2025 Industry Conference were women.

We regularly showcase work by women artists, such as in our 2025 TIFF Cinematheque programmes Through the Fire: The Films of Deepa Mehta, Unknown Legend: Binka Zhelyazkova, and Jigs and Reels: The Complete Films of Joyce Wieland.
