Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's tale of the glories and perils of artistic creation is simply one of the most gorgeous colour films ever made. Vicky Page (Moira Shearer) is a brilliantly talented ballerina who aspires to join the troupe of the famous impresario Boris Lermontov (Anton Walbrook). As Vicky is torn between her love for a young composer and Lermontov's brutally strict philosophy of a life in art, her fragile mental state becomes fatefully bound up with her impending performance in the title ballet, an adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale about a girl whose love for dance drives her to her grave. Stylized in the extreme, the film culminates in the dreamlike "Ballet of the Red Shoes," wherein Jack Cardiff's stunning cinematography fuses seamlessly with the Expressionist production design to create one of the greatest sustained sequences in all cinema.
