Following the success of Clouds of Sils Maria, Assayas reteamed with Kristen Stewart for this stylish psychological thriller/ghost story that won him the Best Director award at Cannes. Stewart plays Maureen, a personal shopper for the rich and famous who is mourning the recent death of her twin brother Lewis, even as she still senses his presence in her life. When her socialite boss is murdered, Maureen begins to wonder whether she is being haunted by a more sinister spirit, or an actual physical threat. Combining elements of genre filmmaking with the ambiguity and intimacy of art cinema, Personal Shopper is "a riveting, impossible-to-shake masterwork that leaves the audience spooked, not by its telling but by its commitment to abstract themes of grief, solitude and coming of age" (Durga Chew-Bose, The Globe and Mail).
