Félicie and Victor, two best friends in 1880s rural France, have grand plans for life beyond the orphanage where they reside. In pursuit of their dreams, the pair set off for Paris, where Félicie plans to study at the best ballet school and Victor aims to become an inventor. Victor gets a job as office boy for famed engineer Gustave Eiffel and is able to put his innovative mind to work. Félicie stumbles into the Paris Opera Ballet, where she meets Odette, a caretaker who allows Félicie to stay in her quarters in exchange for assistance with her responsibilities at the theatre. Félicie eventually gets the opportunity to audition for the ballet school — by assuming another girl's identity in order to do so. She has to work extra hard, having had no formal training, but she can rely on Victor and Odette for support as she faces various obstacles standing in the way of her dream.
