Want the lowdown on Bitch Slap? Check out this interview with writer, producer, director Rick Jacobson:
Sanjay Rajput: SR
Rick Jacobson: RJ
SR: Bitch Slap has been described as "An Intelligent Exploitation Film" what does that mean?
RJ: When Eric Gruendemann and I were close to finishing the script we looked at it and coined the term "Thinking Man's Exploitation Film". When you think of an exploitation film you think of a pretty straightforward storyline. You don't think of it being too complex or the characters being too complex but here we were sitting on a script that had all of this and was quoting from Joseph Conrad, Sun Tzu, and William Congreve.
More than anything else it has a complex story structure. It has a linear A story that goes along in real time, then it has a B story, like Memento, that runs in reverse. As the A story goes along the B story goes in reverse and they meet at the end with a big reveal and fun twist. It's not just your simple hot chicks running around shaking their tits and ass... Well, it is, but there's also a fun level of intelligence in the characters that you don't find in typical exploitation films.
SR: How do I get my Wife or Girlfriend to see a movie called Bitch Slap!
RJ: What you tell them is that Bitch Slap, on its exterior, is obviously an exploitation film where there's a lot of visual eye candy for the guys. You can see that in the trailer and we certainly went out of the way to embrace that side of the film. But at its heart this is a girl power film. This is a film driven by smart, intelligent, powerful women who drive the story and kick ass. They're the ones who get in the fights, they're the ones who get bloody, and they're the ones who are manipulating men.
Obviously the guys are going to get they're eyeful and get served up some action. The women who see the film are going to see what they've always wanted. They watch a film like Die Hard and think, a woman can fight, a woman can save the day and that's what Bitch Slap is. Bitch Slap is three women who drive the story and the last thing they are is damsels in distress. If anything, the men are the victims in this film.
You can get your wives and girlfriends into the theater by telling them that it's a girl power film. Any woman who goes to see this film, once they get past the title and the opening shot of the girls getting out of the car, they'll find that this is actually a fantastic film that embraces and celebrates the power of women.
SR: Bitch Slap was announced at Comic Con & screened at Cannes, how has it been received so far?
RJ: We've been thrilled by the response we've received when we first announced ourselves to the world at last year's Comic Con. The response from the web community and our viral campaign has been fantastic. At Cannes everybody seemed to really enjoy the film and we got a great reaction at the initial premiere screening. There seemed to be a real good energy in the air and a positive reception for it afterword. But the audience at Cannes is more industry based: buyers and market type people.
That's one of the reasons I'm excited to get up to Toronto and show it at Midnight Madness. This is going to be the first time the film is seen by the fanbase it was meant for. I'm looking forward to sitting in the theater, watching it with them, and seeing how the film plays to its core audience.
This film is really meant to be the type of movie where you yell and scream at the screen. It's a popcorn movie. You go in for the two hours and have a lot of fun watching a film. This will truly be the first time the film has a chance to be seen by the people it was designed for.
SR: What's your one sentence pitch to get people to the Ryerson at midnight on Monday, September 14?
RJ: If you want to see smoking hot girls getting in fights, kicking guy's asses, blowing shit up, and essentially saving the world there is no better place to see it than Bitch Slap at Midnight Madness!
Bitch Slap screens Monday September 14 11:59 pm at the Ryerson and Wednesday September 16 3:15 pm at the Scotiabank Theater 3.
