DOC TALKS
BIOGRAPHY: COMPLICATED LIVES
Innovative portraiture is a strong trend among this year's docs. Three directors - Scott Hicks (GLASS: A PORTRAIT OF PHILIP IN TWELVE PARTS), Peter Raymont (A PROMISE TO THE DEAD: THE EXILE JOURNEY OF ARIEL DORFMAN) and Peter Askin (TRUMBO, pictured) - will discuss the challenges and revelations they encountered while producing their films.
COVERING WAR
Since
the conflict in Iraq began, doc makers have often been ahead of other
media in depicting the realities on the ground and the turn in public
opinion back at home. This discussion combines perspectives from the
front lines and the home front with directors Phil Donahue and Ellen
Spiro (BODY OF WAR) and Michael Tucker (THE PRISONER: OR HOW I
PLANNED TO KILL TONY BLAIR, GUNNER PALACE). Tucker will present a
preview clip from his current work-in-progress, THE BULLET-PROOF SALESMAN, about an armoured-car dealer doing business in Iraq, while Donahue and Spiro, will discuss their film BODY OF WAR,
an emotional journey following former soldier Tomas Young as he
undergoes an activist's education in opposing the war that put him in a
wheelchair.
CANADIAN RETROPSECTIVE: Michel Brault
Michel Brault has been a pioneering force in documentary throughout his career. As the cameraman on CHRONIQUE D'UN ÉTÉ
(pictured) in 1961, he played an integral role in what many consider the turning
point for cinema-vérité documentary. This year the Festival is
honouring his body of work in our Canadian Retrospective and
with the publication of André Loiselle's monograph, Cinema as History:
Michel Brault and Modern Quebec. In this discussion, moderated by
Loiselle, Brault is joined by fellow Quebec filmmaker Denys Arcand, the
director of this year's L'ÂGE DES TÉNÈBRES (DAYS OF DARKNESS) and also a director of many key documentaries in Quebec, including QUEBEC: DUPLESSIS ET APRÈS?, ON EST AU COTON, and LE CONFORT ET L'INDIFFERENCE.
They'll look back over Brault's career, the unique situation of Quebec
cinema, and the different demands of documentary and fiction.
WHY DEMOCRACY? WITH NICK FRASER
The
Why Democracy? project is one of most ambitious documentary series ever
undertaken. It encompasses 10 films by 10 directors from 10 countries,
all varying widely in subject matter and style, but united by the theme
of exploring the trials and tribulations of democracy. Nick Fraser, the
commissioning editor of the BBC's acclaimed documentary series
Storyville, was part of an international consortium of public
broadcasters who commissioned the films. They demonstrate a vibrant
documentary movement - provocative and entertaining - from around the
world. Three of them are being shown in full at the Festival: DINNER WITH THE PRESIDENT: A NATION'S JOURNEY, PLEASE VOTE FOR ME and IRON LADIES OF LIBERIA.
In this presentation, Fraser will show preview clips from other films
in the series that have just been completed in preparation for their
fall broadcast. Fraser will discuss their controversial perspectives
and the struggles to get them made. For more about the series, see
whydemocracy.net.

The Festival is honoured to mark this anniversary by hosting the
Carters for a conversation about their work. Everything to Gain: A Conversation with Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter will be moderated by TVO's Allan Gregg.
THE TIME IS NOW: A Conversation About Darfur
The deadly conflict in Sudan is the focus of DARFUR NOW (playing in Real to Reel), the stirring documentary that looks at six individuals striving in their own way to end the conflict in Darfur. DARFUR NOW serves as the focal point for The Time is Now: A Conversation About Darfur, a Mavericks presentation
that assembles four of the film's subjects, along with key members of
the filmmaking team, to discuss their actions and what the rest of us
can do. These participants bring a wealth of knowledge, as well as
eyewitness testimony from the paths of refugee camps to the halls of
political influence. Their stories may be enraging, but their actions
are unwaveringly inspiring. The presentation will bring together actor,
activist and author Don Cheadle; Luis Moreno- Ocampo, Chief Prosecutor
of the International Criminal Court; Pablo Recalde, Head of the United
Nations' World Food Programme in West Darfur; Adam Sterling, Executive
Director of the Sudan Divestment Task Force; filmmaker Ted Braun;

mastery to both the big screen (BORAT: CULTURAL LEARNINGS OF AMERICA
FOR MAKE BENEFIT GLORIOUS NATION OF KAZAKHSTAN) and small screen
("Seinfeld", "Curb Your Enthusiasm"). These two high-profile humourists
have teamed up for a feature-length documentary, RELIGULOUS - a
satirical look at religion in which Maher travels to some of the
world's most popular religious destinations. Maher and Charles will
take to the stage for "Religulous": A Conversation with Bill Maher and Larry Charles, discussing faith, comedy and everything in between, and sharing a teaser clip of their work-in-progress with a very fortunate Mavericks audience.

CANADIAN RETROSPECTIVE: Michel Brault
LES RAQUETTEURS
(1958, 15m) presents the everyday rituals of real French Canadians at a
snowshoeing convention. Brault and co-director Gilles Groulx's use of
handheld camera techniques and rejection of traditional documentary
style had a profound influence on the emergence of direct cinema as
well as Quebec cinema and their embrace of distinctive Quebecois
culture.
CHRONIQUE D'UN ÉTÉ (1961,
85m) features Brault's distinctive walking-camera approach in
co-directors' Jean Rouch and Edgar Morin documentary set in Paris. The
film was a radical departure from previous documentary work and a
poignant moment in the cinema verité movement.
LA LUTTE
(1961, 28m) is a portrait of professional wrestlers and the crowds at
the Montreal Forum. Quebec's finest talents worked collectively on this
documentary, which was partially inspired by Roland Barthes' essay on
wrestling from his celebrated book Mythologies.
POUR LA SUITE DU MONDE
(1963, 105m) focuses on the revival of age-old whale hunting practices
in Île-aux-Coudres. In one of the the greatest documentaries ever made
in Canada, Brault and co-director Pierre Perrault weave relationships
between actuality and fiction; past and present; tradition and
modernity; word and image in the first Canadian film to be entered in
official competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
L'ACADIE, L'ACADIE?!? (1971, 118m) chronicles the struggle of Francophone university students
involved in a series of protests in Moncton, New Brunswick. This
collaboration with Pierre Perrault delves into the ongoing debate over
linguistic issues while documenting the growth of a trans-national
student movement against the oppressive regime of their elders.
